The materialization of modern threats against US forces creates the need for an advanced approach in suppressing the diverse enemy defense practices from around the world. For this, it is imperative that Threat Tec has the ability to forecast and provide training for any and all situational terrains and potential Opposing Force (OPFOR) tactics. In late 2016, Threat Tec introduced anti-aircraft mine training capabilities to its growing capability-inventory of OPFOR training aids.

Overview Of The Anti-Aircraft Mine

An anti-aircraft mine is different from a standard landmine. This differentiation is exemplified by the mine’s primary strengths:

  • Focused and effective deployment against low-flying aircraft
  • Mobility
  • Ease of use
  • Effective cover and concealment
  • Ability to avoid conventional suppression of enemy air defense techniques

Within combat situations, the mine effectively targets helicopters and low-altitude aircraft that come within range. The anti-aircraft mine can be hidden underground or, more commonly, at the top of a tree, giving it maximum effectiveness without being discovered. Once activated, auditory and visual sensors detect approaching aircraft and eject fragments upwardly from a static position, damaging or disabling the target.

Research has indicated these mines include a target sensing assembly with an antenna, signal processor and computer to detect and track low flying objects, such as a helicopter, plane, drone, or missile. These sensors allow the mine to determine and guide the trajectory of the ejected fragments when a designated target enters the lethal zone of the mine.

Threat Tec’s Anti-Aircraft Mine Training Aid

Threat Tec provides a range of force systems with interchangeable effects for efficient adjudication of training events related to anti-aircraft mines.  With the expertise and capabilities required to create and deliver comprehensive education and training on these mines, Threat Tec has created prototypes and simulations for instruction success at avoiding catastrophe in air operations.

Anti-aircraft mine tactics are not a new concept to the emerging generation of opposing forces and Threat Tec is keenly aware on the notion of employing anti-aircraft mines in both defensive and offensive methods is widely socialized in popular video games. Their use is often presented as the preferred method of countering a superior opponents air power. It will not be long before this popular gaming tactic becomes widely applied in real and lethal scenarios.

As threats continue their prevalence within increasingly-complex Operational Environments, Threat Tec is creating new and innovative ways to help our nation’s soldiers prepare for the realities they will face. We are utilizing the latest in threat technology, manufacturing and analysis to effectively replicate new and emerging threats. Contact us to learn how Threat Tec’s custom training solutions can help you train and prepare your soldiers for rapidly-changing hostile threats.
